We began working on a Thursday night assembling the axles. Then the bearings slip on and off the carrier each time you have to pull it out and change the shims. Repeat as needed to make for a good fit. I just want to be more educated on this and know all the options I have. The Tacoma was exclusively designed for and built in North America, bigger and more refined than the Hi-Lux, which is still sold throughout the rest of the world. Since this is steering we are talking about, it was important to get it right. Once the axle was torn down and cleaned, we put on new ball joints.

Rear brake setup with driveshaft installed Front brake lines and new tabs Now on to the finishing touches that happened as we found time later that week. The thick ring of the backing plate or eliminator fills in the recess in the rim of the spindle and provides a flat surface for the outer hub seal to bolt to. Here are some before and after pictures, misc pictures, and during swap pics…. Just line the screwdriver blade up with the cone washer slot and give the screwdriver handle a few raps with the hammer. They feature the highest quality parts, the most complete kit at the best price anywhere.
The story continues A shift-on-the-fly four wheel drive system, allowing front hubs to be locked from within the truck, appeared in 1984, on the fifth generation. As a gasket maker it seeks and seals leak paths that cut gaskets cannot. The StepSide appeared in 2000, the four-door DoubleCab and S-Runner in 2001. Carefully pry with screwdriver or use a pair of channel lock pliers and worh it slowly back and forth until it comes out. I like the latter, the birfield itself gets packed full that's where all the action is anyway and then put some around the knuckle to keep the knuckle bearings lubricated. Towing capacity on all trucks was 3,500 pounds when properly equipped; the one-ton could tow 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Once they were on, all the brake components were installed. The dealer can replace the amplifier if it happens to you. The truck looks and performs better than I had even imagined. This would allow the spring to sit level and work better without giving too much lift. Note: Where did the term MarTack come from, you might ask? Note: Kit does not include shocks. The new suspension used a coil spring double-wishbone configuration. Fit the end of the chisel into the slot of the washer and angle it to one side.
Then, clean that sucker out really well. It is essential to upgrade and maintain every part on your truck from axles to suspension. The variety of axles and parts allows you to look through different years, makes, and models, such as a Toyota truck axle. The picture on the right shows how far the axle should push into the housing. Have others had trouble doing so? Then dry it off and use a blast of brake cleaner to get the solvent residue off. Otherwise any sort of wheel bearing grease is fine, I typically use a moly fortified high temperature wheel bearing grease for this. We spent one weekend to get both axles ready for the swap.
Newer water pump 1 mounted and 1 extra full size matching spare. There is a picture below which will explain this well. Once the holes were cut, we found a piece of tubing that would serve as our shackle mounts. This was possible because the larger Toyota T100 had been introduced in 1993 for more serious truck buyers. Once I got it set right, I added two more tack welds around the same depth, 120° apart, ground them flush and that was it. We bent the lines by hand and used some steel braided lines to run from the axles to the hard lines.
So what makes our kits stand out? According to Wade Hoyt of Toyota, there is no relationship between the two models. Now we needed to convert the brake lines. But swapping axles can be a tedious and expensive job. If you decide to run 60 axles in your mini, your driveshaft will run from the center of your truck to the passenger side. This makes train repairs of broken Birfields easier, since you can carry only the joint and you avoid the need to hammer or pound the broken Birf off the inner axle. Engine choices changed again in 1981, with the 2. This meant we had to offset the shackle mounts to fit the location of the springs.
I used the second technique on my first rebuild I didn't have a spring scale then and I found the bearings a bit tight. The older Toyota frames are trussed very well inside the frame wall. Because we were using a full width axle, the spring perches on the axle are wider than the frame. Replaced the hood, passenger fender, and passenger fender apron. We finally were happy with the height. Once the knuckle bearings are installed, insert the inner axle and birfield into the axle housing.
We welded it in place and tapered it to fit our tie rod end. Prerunners are often modified two wheel drive models to save money. Anyway, the idea is that you push something into the slot in the washer, expanding it a bit, causing the cone washer to push against the tapered hole and it'll just climb right up the stud. Not everything is good, though. The Bad: Paint Busted up but entirely functional fuse box under the hood from the fender bender.
