I did a couple of things different however. The approximate failure mileage was 11,000. I fear a major accident each day I get in and drive it work. Pulled over, waited a few minutes, restarted the car. Hoping it is a blown fuse but maybe the alternator. Symptoms of electrical failure and reset are daily now and external lights dimming on off.
Does anyone know where the altenator is located so i can check it out. Thinking that maybe I didn't have my brake pedal pushed hard enough scaring me I pushed my foot harder on the brake pedal. Other items replaced were the onboard computer and alternator. We tried to remove the cover seperately and with the alternator attached and could not get it out. Finally, after all is finished, don't forget to re-teach the computer after the battery has been disconnected, it's explained in the user manual. Also, subtle engine delay and fanlike sounds coming from underneath experienced during and after these episodes.
This part is also sometimes called Ford Freestyle Car Alternators. Everytime I get back from mechanic it will work for 3 days. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. That is all of the bodywork access work you'll need to do. Just a thought, and 5 years from any battery is an outstanding life expectancy, but near it's end.
After a wrong diagnosis and replacing the throttle body and pcm, the whole problem was fixed by replacing the alternator. Most orders are shipped the same day. Push the cable and plug up then back, out of the way. So I drove it very carefully straight to the dealership service department. So I changed the battery. The computer has been reprogrammed once, but no help. Near collision with a tractor-trailer in bad weather while trying to get out of the way and off the highway.
Jul 23, 2016 Sounds like the new alternator is not charging the battery. If you notice that your headlights dim or your battery won't stay fully charged, it may be time to replace your alternator or other related parts. Ok the alternator is out! Had alternator replaced because all electrical starting shutting down and turning off while driving also transmisson was trying to go in reverse while driving reverse lights would come on very dangerous. I pulled off the main hwy and shut car off, I then tried to restart the car. Last time it broke which was yesterday it workrd for over 2 weeks. The lighting would dim and brighten on and off while the car was running and there was almost a pulse in the rev of the engine. Then, the car didn't seem to move, so I pressed the gas pedal a little harder.
The screw type retainers should be separated and first the outer, then inner part needs to be just pushed back in. To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required. Cross head screwdriver for the push-in screw-out type retainers. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator and battery needed to be replaced. We also carry jump starters, car batteries, and starters for most vehicles. Called Ford motor company customer service for assistance to see if this was a known issue.
Is the battery symbol lit on the dash , check charging system message on driver info center? Brought the car for transmission service to valvoline, then to dowling Ford where the vehicle was purchased. Brought car to bob thomas Ford in hamden, connecticut for a transmission program update and complete transmission service. I would add that with a work light you can see a little without working blindly if you work under the front passenger wheel well with the tire off and on jackstands. Luckily covered under extended warranty. Trouble light gone, engine performed fine, and no issue the rest of the trip. As already suggested, check belt and new alternator. Had to get it towed home and was late to work.
One thing I had to do differently was to leave the alternator cover or shield in the engine compartment and remove just the alternator. The first was the surging that everybody is complaning about. The mechanic is looking into the issue further, due to the number of times we have been in for these issues. Since then several alternators were changed by the dealer but the warning light remained and the dealer does not know how to fix this. At least they're the things that I know they've done because the don't tell you all the things they've fixed or replaced.
Using the cross head screwdriver, carefully try not to push as you turn unscrew the three following screw type retainers, at the top of the rubber shield one and two to the right of that one at the bottom of the shield and one a little way up , which should allow you to pull the rubber shield down out of the way and to pull the plastic shield outwards out of the way this is where the assistant will come in later. I was able to get the alternator out with the cover but I agree that leaving the cover and removing the alternator would be easier and not risk tearing up the rubber boot by the wheel. I noticed that the gauges were making a ticking noise at that time as well. With on 64000 miles on the vehicle none of these problems should be occurring. Waited off the highway a few minutes, re-started, and was fine.
